After Long Silence by Helen Fremont

This excellent book is emphatically not the three-star variety as suggested by a Green Bay publication. The budding journalists there had decided that it oughtn't to get the full five, as it had been extracted from an unwilling mother. This is missing the central premise of the book, that the mother had actively kept a fascinating and urgent question of human identity away from her American-born daughters.
